Xiaohe Chen:The Hurting Household Registration System

I am a suburbanite of Wenzhou, Zhejiang, where they call me "A Farmer". When I was born, my life was set. The name "Farmer" was set on me along my entire life. Actually, a farmer should be a person who work in a farm, differed from those who are born in city or those who do not work in farms. I had not choice but to take the code when I was registered formally in Police Department.

In China, farmers are discriminated. Children of farmers are still in the same catalog and they can not choose their favorite careers. Their future is tied with the code "A Farmer". The schools where they can be educated and the jobs which they can take are all limited to the Household Registration System. This system is a set of grids around us. They say that people are born equally, but I just did not feel it.

When I was a child, my parents tried to find a way to get me into a good middle school for better education and better future. They failed just because I was a farmer. My mom got sick after the failure. At that time, I did not understand why they had to try to do this. But now, I understand that they were trying to get me out of the catalog of "Farmers". the fact is that I am still a farmer, they haven't change anything. But I have buried this thing in my heart. Why? I keep looking for the answer. Why are we not qualified for our ideals? Why do they deprive our opportunities? We are just the same human being like those in the cities.

Even I have been in the United States for years, I still remember that thing happened in China. It hurts me a lot. However, in the United States, I finally experience what the people are supposed to be. I think it over and over and I have found that the problem is the horrible Household Registration System. But I are still not able to change anything until I saw the articles from the China Democracy Party. One day, I talked to Mr. Xie Wanjun, the Chairman of the party.

I told him what happened to me. He sympathized and told me where the sticking point was. He also told me a lot of things on democracy. He established the China Democracy Party, gathering overseas Chinese, in order to push the Chinese society forward and to make it more democratic.

I am moved by his selfless spirit. I am now a member of his party. I know the individual's power is too weak and we are able to perform the political reforms in China by gathering all the people's power.
